Bartram's Gardens Visitor Center

This project was to design a visitor center for Bartram's Gardens in west Philadelphia.  The site had great views to center city, which was harnessed in most of the project.  Development of the building was stripped down and the focus shifted almost completely on the site itself.  The solution I designed created a linear procession for pedestrians, from the parking/building area to directly below Bartram's house.  Locating the parking on the far side of the building allowed the use of trees and the building itself as a wall to block the views to the gardens. This also blocked view of the service entrances from the inside of the site, allowing an uninterrupted view of nature while in the gardens.  A winding trail leads down the hill from the procession as a connector to the docks below.  Along this path are small terraces which have seating where you can take in the views.
