Urban Farm and Hostel

This projects goal was to create an urban farm that also had a hostel to provide shelter for those working on the farm.  Researching farm typologies lead to two important design decisions; geometric shapes are constantly used to give structure to farms and tiered farming is a very beautiful way of preserving slopes.  The solution I designed for this problem started with a geometric shape, an oval, to order all the components of the farm.  The oval was enlarged to create a line that traveled from the bottom left of the site to the top right.  This became a thru-path to allow movement from Powelton Avenue to Baring Street.  A central path leads directly thru the site from the bottom right to the top left, where the existing building was.  The existing building was converted to a vertical farm, greenhouses and storage for farm equipment.  The hostel took queues from the different pathways and had a sloping roof to capture water and to allow clerestory windows.  A community kitchen is located on the first floor with outdoor seating.
